January is a great time to start the new year afresh and review what you would like to accomplish this coming year.  As the goals of many people are financial in nature, keeping your financial data secure so that it is not stolen is an important corollary to that goal.

How often to get you a notice that you need to change a website password because your user account credentials were stolen? Too often, right? Breaches happen because websites pay too little attention to cyber-security which is often an afterthought for the website developers.

We focus a lot on network and computer security.  But what should you be doing to keep your smartphone secure?

New smartphones may cost $700 or more, but that is nothing compared to the value of the data stored on your phone.  Identity theft alone will cost you more than $1500 and a huge amount of time to fix.

Eric received an email notice that his company’s domain name is expiring.  The email appeared to be an offer to renew his company domain name via a ‘Secure Online Payment’ for $64. He sensed a scam.

“I recalled renewing it just over a year ago for a 5-year term,” recalled Eric.

Earlier this week I reported on a potentially serious Pokémon Go security issue that Niantic, the game’s developer, was given full access to your Google account when the app was installed on iOS devices.

As suspected, this was an bug in the user registration process.

Pokemon Go is an incredibly popular game that has kids and adults wandering neighborhoods and towns seeking to catch elusive Pokemon in “augmented reality.”   It’s a wonderfully addictive game that gets kids off the sofa, away from their video game console and into the real world, even if it is “augmented.

Scammers are getting really good at making legitimate-looking phishing emails. But accidentally clicking a link could result in identity theft, destruction of your data, stolen credentials or severe virus infection that will cost you thousands of dollars.
